ABBOTSFORD — A spokesperson for the Abbotsford Police Department says 12 charges have been approved against a prolific criminal offender after two search warrants were executed at homes in Abbotsford and Mission last year.

According to a statement from AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, the Abbotsford PD and residents in the Sumas Prairie area witnessed a trouble trend involving a whopping 67 per cent increase in property-crime related offences during the first five months of 2025.

Police took action, announcing on June 4, 2025 that members of the AbbyPD’s Crime Reduction Unit had executed two search warrants at homes in Abbotsford and Mission. The warrants signalled the launch of a concerted effort to hold those responsible for the surge in crime accountable for their alleged deeds.

Sgt. Walker says in the months following the search warrant execution, members of the CRU worked relentlessly to employ a range of investigative strategies and followed the evidence wherever it led. Their dogged, determined efforts were supported through funding provided by the provincial Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) Program.

In late November 2025, Sgt. Walker says 12 charges were approved against 34-year-old prolific offender Cody Ashton, which included break and enter, assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, motor vehicle theft, theft over $5,000 and mischief.

Sgt. Walker says co-accused 42-year-old Justin Graham and 30-year-old Kayla Hellstrom were each charged with three counts of possession of property obtained by crime. Additionally, Graham faces an extra charge for breach of a release order.

“This investigation sends a clear message: crime will not be tolerated in Abbotsford,” Sgt. Walker said. “AbbyPD is committed to relentlessly pursuing those who victimize our community and ensuring they are held fully accountable. Through determination, strategic enforcement, and strong partnerships, we will continue to protect our city and uphold the safety and trust our residents deserve.”
