IIO continues probe after man who was found laying on Lougheed Highway in distress later died
MAPLE RIDGE — B.C.’s civilian watchdog agency says it is continuing its investigation about an August 2025 incident in which a man was found laying on Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge but later died in October.
In a statement, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. says officers with the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment responded to a call on August 30, 2025 at about 4:30 a.m. for the report of a man who was believed to be in distress and screaming in the 20900 block of Lougheed Highway.
The IIO says five Mounties arrived, and the man who was the subject of the call was found to be laying down in traffic lanes on the highway. Police placed him in handcuffs and held him to prevent further injury.
The man was in his late 30s and was declared brain dead on September 11, 2025, the IIO said. He was subsequently pronounced deceased on October 11, 2025.
