Chilliwack meat store supports seniors with new drop-in space

CHILLIWACK — A community-minded business that helps feed seniors and vulnerable residents in Chilliwack is expanding its services beyond the meat and cheese.

Tydel Foods, through its Community Angels Food and Housing Support Society charity, is opening a new Seniors Room on Thursday, January 8.

“This space is part of our commitment to reducing food insecurity and isolation among vulnerable seniors,” said Community Angels founder Brigida Crosbie.

“When seniors are nourished, connected, and feel safe, their overall health, dignity, and sense of belonging are strengthened.”

Seniors are invited to drop in at the space from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for free coffee, tea and meals. Staff and volunteers will also be present at all times as guests help themselves to crochet kits, puzzles or quiet activities.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen how deeply isolation, loneliness, depression, and fear have affected seniors – especially since COVID.”

Chilliwack-based interior designer Maria Killam designed the room located at the nonprofit’s office on the main floor of the Lock’s Pharmacy building, unit 108, on 9181 Main Street.

Community Angels is also preparing to expand the Seniors Food Support Program into Hope, Boston Bar, Sunshine Valley and the surrounding rural areas – supporting low-income seniors with free produce and non-perishables, as well as $125 monthly food support for meat.
