Inmate assaulted at Abbotsford prison

ABBOTSFORD — An inmate who was serving time at a medium-security Abbotsford prison had recently been hospitalized after an assault.

Correctional Service Canada says the incident occurred on December 19 at Matsqui Institution.

The injured inmate was taken to an outside hospital for treatment and has since returned to the facility.

Abbotsford police were notified, and appropriate actions have been taken regarding the assailants.

No staff members or other inmates were injured in the event.

“The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” said the corrections agency.

“In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.”

It had been the second reported assault at Matsqui Institution in 2025.
