Highway 3 set to reopen by New Year after damage from heavy rain

HOPE — The B.C. government says the 50-metre section of Highway 3 from the Lower Mainland into the Interior may be ready for travel again by New Year’s Day.

Rainfall damaged the site 42 kilometres east of the Highway 3/5 junction near Hope, washing out a section of the highway.

Initial estimates indicated it could take weeks to restore access, but engineers have now confirmed that less construction is needed and that utilities will not need to be relocated.

“Contractors are working around the clock to restore the highway and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit is sourcing material and supplies as quickly as possible,” wrote the Ministry.

“If conditions continue to be favourable, the ministry could potentially open the highway earlier.”

Drivers can expect reopening on a detour between December 26 and January 1.

The temporary alignment will have a reduced speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour, and access may be limited to passenger cars depending on site conditions.

Most work on all other sites along Highway 3 affected by recent flooding and slides is set to be completed by tomorrow, December 22.

Sunshine Valley remains accessible from Hope, while Manning Park Resort can be accessed from Highway 3 via Princeton.
