CULTUS LAKE — The Inaugural Meeting of the Cultus Lake Park Board Tuesday evening (Nov. 8) saw four of the five Commissioners swear their oath of office. John Beesley, Erika Jartved, and Tom Moul were elected as Commissioners while Darcy Bauer and Kirk Dzaman were acclaimed as Commissioners from the City of Chilliwack.

However Bauer was unable to attend the meeting and unable to take his oath with the group. Instead, he swore his oath earlier to a judge. Bauer still took part in the meeting via a video link.

Kirk Dzaman was elected by acclamation as the Chair of the Board. Dzaman acted as the Vice-Chair of the Board during the last term. John Beesley was the lone individual to accept a nomination as Vice-Chair and moved into the role uncontested.

During his opening address, Chair Dzaman said it will be important for the Board to be open and accessible to residents. “Proper and effective community engagement is going to be key in these next four years,” said Dzaman. “There will be lots of public meetings, conversations with commissioners, conversations with the C.A.O., conversations with staff, that are going to enable us to have the proper information so we can form the right opinion and take the right action.”

Dzaman also paid tribute to his family who sat in the gallery. And he acknowledged his wife’s late grandfather Jack Parker, who he says, served as the Cultus Lake Park Board Chair in the years 1961, 1964 and 1965. “I’m honoured to sit in the same seat as him,” said Dzaman.

Chilliwack-Hope M.P. Mark Strahl sent a letter to the board, sending his regrets for missing the inaugural meeting, saying his responsibilities in Ottawa prevented him from attending. In the letter Strahl congratulated the Board on their election and wished them well.
