Province closes Chilliwack park due to ‘atmospheric river’ and flood damage

CHILLIWACK — BC Parks says it has closed Chilliwack Lake Park due to atmospheric river and flood damage.

In a statement on the park’s website dated Sunday, December 14, BC Parks says it has shuttered the park until further notice in the interest of public safety.

“This closure is in response to deteriorating conditions and risk of facilities washing out,” BC Parks wrote.

Chilliwack River Valley resident Derrick Kramer told Fraser Valley Today that Chilliwack Lake Forest Service Road is currently washed out at about the 3-km mark past Chilliwack Lake Park.

A person had been recently stranded up the forest service road but was able to get out late Sunday night.

The park’s closure is one of several public spaces closed by recent flooding events.

The Fraser Valley Regional District says six parks are closed “for the safety of visitors” at this time:

• Kettle Valley Rail Trail
• Thacker Regional Park
• Thompson Regional Park
• Dogwood Community Trail
• Elk Mountain
• Mt. Cheam

Thurston Meadows at Camp Chilliwack Valley is also closed until further notice while crews clean up, with alternative group-site options under consideration before the New Year.

Trails on the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack will be “inaccessible” for a while, but trailkeepers remain optimistic for the local flora and fauna.

“The native plants and animals absolutely love the surge of nutrients that comes with the flooding!” wrote the Reserve Society. “If there was more undyked floodplain left intact, other flooding in the area would actually be mitigated as this type of habitat is specially equipped to take on lots of water!”
