BREAKING: Highway 1 closed between Sumas Way and No. 3 Road in Abbotsford

UPDATE, 8:25 P.M.: Through a statement issued by the City of Abbotsford, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit has closed Highway 1 between Sumas Way and No. 3 Road in Abbotsford due to groundwater on the highway, out of concern for public safety.

The City of Abbotsford has issued new evacuation orders for seven properties north of Hwy. 1, including the Clarion Hotel (36035 N. Parallel Road), the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods building (1767 Angus Campbell Road), 1920 North Parallel Road, 2054 Whatcom Road, 2111 Whatcom Road, 35388 Delair Road and Delair Park (35570 Old Yale Road).

Update 7:49 P.M.: Highway 1 has been closed down in both directions between Whatcom Road and Sumas Way due to water breaching the roads.

Motorists coming from Whatcom Road are urged to head northbound on Whatcom, and anyone coming from Sumas Way is asked to head northbound to Highway 11.

ABBOTSFORD — Emergency officials say floodwaters in Sumas Prairie and Huntingdon Village are likely to reach their highest levels within the next 12 hours.

When they do, they are expected to be well below the levels experienced in the massive 2021 flood and closer to the levels of a flood that hit the area in 1990. That means water will reach Highway 1 late Thursday (Dec. 11) evening or early Friday morning.

Evacuation Orders are still in place for 82 properties in Huntingdon Village and 371 properties in Sumas Prairie West. Evacuation Alerts are also in place for over one thousand properties in Sumas Prairie East and West. Residents of those properties should be prepared to leave their homes in a moment if the need arises.

All other residents in the area are being asked to stay clear of evacuation areas, away from floodwaters and off all flooded or water-covered roads. The request is being made for the safety of residents and to ease the workload for emergency responders.

The floodwaters in the Sumas Prairies are the result of flooding along the Nooksack River in Whatcom County in Washington State. The river levels jumped its banks on Wednesday, sending water north into Canada. Heavy flooding is reported throughout Whatcom County.
