CHILLIWACK — Facebook Marketplace has emerged as a favourite online option for selling unwanted, used items locally.

However, for a couple of crooks in Chilliwack this past week, they got their just reward for stealing items that didn’t belong to them.

Chilliwack Mounties executed a search warrant in the 10000 block of Fairbanks Crescent in Fairfield Island, located a few blocks east of Gwynne Vaughan Park, on Thursday, October 28 and recovered stolen items listed for sale on Marketplace.

Corporal Martin Godard, media relations officer for the Chilliwack RCMP detachment, said Tuesday (Nov. 1) that the investigation began when a resident alerted police that property stolen from his residence a month prior had surfaced on an online sales forum. Once an investigation confirmed ownership and location of the goods, RCMP executed a search warrant and recovered further stolen goods, controlled substances, and a loaded firearm.

“This file showcases the great work being done by our front-line members and our specialized investigative support sections. Our various police units worked seamlessly to advance this investigation leading to the recovery of thousands of dollars of stolen property, drugs and a firearm,” said Godard.

The males were identified and released. The investigation remains active.

This case serves as a strong reminder for people to mark items of value with a unique identifier and to keep a list of the serial numbers, said Cpl. Godard.
