Police launch new initiative to tackle shoplifting in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Police Department is shining a light on the growing issue of shoplifting in the community with a new enforcement campaign.

Project Lighthouse aims to protect business owners, employees and customers by increasing the identification and apprehension of offenders.

Participating businesses in the pilot program will have “Project Lighthouse” signs throughout their premises, including all entry and exit points.

AbbyPD’s Community Engagement Response Team (CERT) will work closely with the businesses to address individual shoplifting concerns.

“No business should face the rise in shoplifting alone. Project Lighthouse is built on partnership — working side by side with local businesses to prevent theft, streamline reporting, and build a safer, stronger community together,” said Sergeant Gray of CERT.

AbbyPD recorded a 65 per cent increase in shoplifting-related calls in the first half of 2025, with community feedback showing that many incidents remain unreported due to time constraints and concerns about the justice process.

The project is looking to reduce shoplifting incidents by summer next year.
