HIGHWAY ALERT

Strong winds spark alert for Coquihalla, Okanagan Connector

Nov 6, 2026 | 9:05 AM

Environment Canada has issued a highway alert for the region from Nicola through to Kelowna.

The alert is in effect along the Coquihalla through to Merritt and Kamloops and for the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna.

A storm system approaching the BC coast is forecast to bring a prolonged period of southeast winds gusting from 60 to 80 km/h in the Interior and highway passes.

Later this afternoon, an incoming cold front could push the gusts to as strong as 90 km/h.

Winds are gradually expected to ease overnight but another potentially stronger storm is set to follow Saturday evening.

Rain in the region combined with the wind could cause reduced visibility.

Environment Canada warns high-sided vehicles may be pushed around by strong crosswinds and parks and forest areas may sustain damage.

Meteorologists say weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

Road conditions are available at DriveBC.

You’re asked to monitor alerts and forecasts, especially if you’re planning to hit the highway.
