Advocate says Ottawa could be undercounting homeless Canadians
OTTAWA — Advocates are welcoming news that the federal government plans to end homelessness within 10 years — a crisis one activist said may be bigger than Ottawa realizes.
This week’s federal budget estimated about 65,000 Canadians are homeless. Tim Richter of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness said he thinks the true figure could be much higher.
“That 65,000 number is one day, one night, but that doesn’t tell you the number of different people who will experience homelessness in the year, which is exponentially bigger,” he said in an interview.
Richter said the current housing crisis began in the 1990s, when the federal government stopped funding social housing.
