LANGLEY – A 23-year-old Langley man has been arrested and charged with multiple counts for an alleged assault motivated by hate that happened last week in Langley.

Langley RCMP spokesperson Corporal Mansoor Sahak says police received a report last Tuesday, Oct. 20, at approximately 3:30 p.m., from multiple witnesses about an assault on a mother and her child by a man near Douglas Park in Langley City.

Cpl. Sahak says it is alleged that a 23-year-old man assaulted the mother and her two children and uttered racial slurs. Police say multiple witnesses observed the incident and contacted the police. The suspect fled prior to police arrival, Cpl. Sahak said.

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, officers from the Langley RCMP’s Special Response Team arrested a man closely matching the description of the suspect, who was held in police custody to appear before a judge, Cpl. Sahak said.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, the BC Prosecution Service formally charged 23-year-old Braden Perozny of Langley with three counts of assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code, and three counts of committing an offence motivated by hatred, contrary to section 320.1001(1)(b) of the Criminal Code, Cpl. Sahak said.

“This was a deeply concerning incident, and our thoughts are with the woman and her family as they continue to receive support from Langley RCMP Victim Services,” said Cpl. Sahak. “We appreciate the members of the public who came forward to assist and provide information to investigators.”

Perozny is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
