The Chilliwack Chiefs and Nanaimo Clippers faced off for the first time this season on Sunday night. Sunday was Huskers night, where football met hockey, and we celebrated the Valley Huskers football team.

Heading into the game, the Chiefs and Clippers were evenly matched both on the season and in their head-to-head record over the past five seasons. This made for a great matchup and a test for the Chiefs, who were coming off wins in their last three and now faced the reigning Coastal Conference champions.

Both teams came out with high energy, kicking off the first period with fast-paced play and good chances at either end. Just as a Chiefs penalty ended, before the penalized player was back in play, Nanaimo’s Jack Clark grabbed a rebound and put it past the Chilliwack goaltender to open the scoring.

A great shot from the bumper on the power play by Markuss Sieradzkis in the second period got the Chiefs on the board and tied the game up. With his goal, assisted by Justin Dumais and Luke Pilkington, Sieradzkis tallied his fifth of the season in as many games and ignited the Chilliwack crowd.

Tied at one with just over three minutes to go, Brandon Osborne received the puck at his own blue line and weaved into Nanaimo’s zone before sending it through the goalie’s pads and into the back of the net to give the Chiefs the lead. Chilliwack held onto their one-goal lead for the remaining minutes and secured another two points.

Chilliwack’s next game will be on the road in Surrey on Friday, October 9th, before the team heads to Alberta for the BCHL Showcase. The Chiefs will be back at the Chilliwack Coliseum in November, where they will spend three weekends in a row at home, starting on November 6th.
