The Chilliwack Chiefs and Surrey Eagles faced off for the second time this season on Friday night for TGIF Night. The last time these two teams met, Surrey got the better of Chilliwack and took the win on their home ice. This time around, the Chiefs looked to use home ice to their advantage and even the season series. Going into the game, Chilliwack had won their last two, while Surrey looked to end their three-game losing streak and secure their first road win of the season.

The Chiefs and Eagles traded chances in the first before Markuss Sieradzkis grabbed control of a rebound and opened the scoring for Chilliwack. With his fourth goal of the season, Sieradzkis increased his goal streak to four games. The first period saw some animosity between the teams and the start of some aggression that carried on throughout the game.

While Chilliwack started the second period up by one, the Eagles quickly tied it up with a goal of their own just 59 seconds into the middle frame. Hudson Deren regained the lead for the Chiefs with his first career BCHL goal a couple of minutes later, putting one home on the backhand. With a slim lead, Chilliwack found themselves with the task of killing a four-minute penalty to keep their lead intact. Between Chilliwack’s goalie, David Di Girolamo, standing his ground and the Chiefs penalty killers not letting Surrey set up, Chilliwack got through the four minutes, lead still in hand. With less than a minute to go in the middle frame, Justin Dumais increased the lead with his second of the season.

Like the first period, the third saw the teams trading chances at each end. The Chiefs had several good chances before the Eagles’ Sammy Smith got behind Chilliwack’s defense and was sent in for a breakaway goal to get Surrey back within one. Chilliwack fought hard to keep their lead and did, winning the game 3-2.

On Sunday, October 4th, football meets hockey as we celebrate the Valley Huskers during Huskers night. The Chiefs will take on the reigning Coastal Conference Champs, the Nanaimo Clippers, at 5 pm. Sunday will also see the return of the fan-favourite post-game skate, where fans will get the chance to skate with their favourite Chiefs players!
