Novice motorist loses license for driving drunk after he struck cement divider on Hwy. 1 in Langley (VIDEO)

LANGLEY – A Class 7 novice driver has lost his license for drinking and driving following a crash in which he struck a cement divider on Highway 1 over the weekend in Langley.

Langley RCMP spokesperson Corporal Mansoor Sahak says police received a call at 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning (Sept. 19) from a witness who was following a Ford Ranger pickup on Hwy. 1 near the 264 Street exit in Langley. The vehicle was observed swerving and driving on the shoulder.

As the witness conveyed this information to police dispatch, the 23-year-old driver struck a cement divider and came to rest on the shoulder of the highway. The sequence of events was captured on dash cam footage from the witness.

Shortly thereafter, Langley RCMP front-line officers arrived on scene to attend to the driver of the Ford Ranger. The driver, a 23-year-old man from Kamloops, showed signs of impairment and officers conducted an impaired driving investigation.

The driver failed a roadside Approved Screening Device and was issued a 90-day driving ban with a 30-day vehicle impound. He was also fined $500 and will have to pay fees associated with the impound as well.

“We are thankful that this driver’s ambitious goal to drive to Kamloops from Burnaby did not end in a fatality,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak with the Langley RCMP. “Impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal deaths in Canada, and it is totally preventable,” added Cpl. Sahak. “We are thankful for the witness who called police about this impaired driver.”

Police urge the public to call 911 immediately if they suspect that a driver may be impaired by drugs or alcohol.
