Senior cyclist killed in hit-and-run Saturday night in Chilliwack

An adult man was arrested and released pending further investigation.

Investigators will continue to work closely with the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the BC Coroners Service as they advance the investigation.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with CCTV or dash camera footage of the suspect vehicle in the areas of Portage Avenue, Woodbine Street, Hazel Street, Menzies Street, and Yale Road around the time of the collision is asked to contact Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 and quote file number 2026-42122.

CHILLIWACK – Police in Chilliwack attended a fatal collision Saturday evening at Portage Avenue and Woodbine Street in Chilliwack.

BC RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Vanessa Munn released a two-sentence statement to Fraser Valley Today confirming that police attended a fatal collision in Chilliwack.

“We have received your voicemails, and can confirm police are on scene at a fatal collision. However, we are not able to provide any further details at this time,” Sgt. Munn said.

She referred comment to the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment.

The Pulse Point app indicates at least two ambulances were notified about a traffic collision on Portage Avenue at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday night (Sept. 19).

At least eight RCMP officers were seen behind yellow caution tape near a black tent set up at Portage Avenue and Woodbine Street, the scene of the accident, flanked by at least five RCMP vehicles in and around the yellow caution tape.

Just prior to the traffic collision, a man named Bob just happened to be recording on his iPhone while he was recreating at nearby Portage Park. He played audio to two members of the news media who were present at the accident scene Saturday. In the audio, a vehicle is heard honking twice before accelerating, accompanied by the sound of a revved up engine. Seconds later, a traffic collision is heard, resulting in audible gasps from nearby bystanders and/or spectators, with one person blurting out, “Oh my God!”

A Chilliwack resident reached out to Fraser Valley Today Saturday night claiming that the responsible vehicle struck the person on a bike and fled the scene entirely.

“I have video footage of the accident,” said the Chilliwack resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “The entire accident. From him passing the ‘slow vehicle’ – aka an Amazon delivery van, to him fleeing and not slowing down.”

Fraser Valley Today has emailed the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment seeking additional information on the incident.
