Looking ahead

Sachdeva hopes his story can inspire other newcomers working their first survival job to continue working towards their goals.

“Moving to a new country is an act of courage long before you arrive,” said Sachdeva. “Confidence rarely comes first — more often, it comes after you decide to take the chance. Some of the most meaningful opportunities in my life came because I acted before I felt fully prepared. Trust yourself. Stay curious. Keep learning.”

He is also looking to raise awareness of his work in the water industry amid recurring drought pressures and rising agricultural demands in British Columbia.

“Many people are surprised to learn that less than 20 per cent of B.C.’s farmland is irrigated, yet it produces more than 65 per cent of the province’s food value,” said Sachdeva.

“My work focuses on helping ensure British Columbia has the skilled professionals, leadership and education needed to sustain food production and responsible water management for future generations.”

Sachdeva is the first Abbotsford resident to be named in the Awards’ 18-year history and the first national Youth Award recipient from the Fraser Valley.

The Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards were founded in 2009 to recognize inspiring immigrants who have made a positive difference in the country.
