Bear attacks toddler outside Maple Ridge home

MAPLE RIDGE — Maple Ridge police and BC Conservation Officers have responded to an incident involving a child and an aggressive bear late Sunday morning (Aug. 9).

At around 11:30 a.m., RCMP say first responders were paged out to the report of a bear attacking a three-year-old outside her family’s home in the 12300 block of 240 Street.

The child was airlifted to hospital with non-life-altering injuries.

While officers were on scene, the bear then returned to the home and the immediate area “multiple times”, and at around noon, officers “came into contact” with it.

“As the bear had showed signs of aggression and already attacked a small child, officers made the decision to discharge a firearm in an effort to protect public safety in the immediate area,” said Maple Ridge RCMP. “The bear was struck but continued to flee into a wooded area.”

Police blocked the area of 240 Street from 123 Avenue to 125 Avenue at about 12:40 p.m. as conservation officers worked to track and acquire the “aggressive animal”.

Residents in the surrounding area are asked to be aware and stay indoors.

Anyone with further sightings or who would like to report an aggressive or threatening bear is asked to contact the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
