CUPE 1267 applies for mediation after months of negotiation with City

MISSION — The union representing hundreds of public service workers in Mission has applied for mediation with the BC Labour Relations Board after months of negotiation with the City.

“CUPE 1267 applied for mediation because the local believes it’s the best opportunity to continue negotiations, reach a fair collective agreement, and avoid disruption to the public services Mission residents rely on,” CUPE BC Communications Representative Jessica Wilkin told Fraser Valley Today.

“While there are still important issues to resolve, including wages, the local won’t be discussing details of bargaining proposals publicly while negotiations are ongoing.”

The collective agreement between CUPE Local 1267 and the City of Mission expired on December 31, 2025, with negotiations starting in May this year.

However, both parties remained unable to reach an agreement on key issues, such as wage increases and benefits.

“The City is committed to resolving matters fairly, quickly, and in a constructive and respectful manner, and welcomes the assistance of a mediator to come to a fair resolution so services may be maintained for our residents who rely on them,” said Barclay Pitkethly, City of Mission CAO.

The City says its last proposal included a cumulative wage increase of 11 per cent over three years, a one-time inflationary support payment of four per cent, earlier access to increased vacation pay, increased paramedical, vision and dental care, and a subsidized pass to the Mission Leisure Centre.

“We appreciate the crucial role our employees play in the delivery of critical services to benefit the community, and we have worked diligently to reach an agreement that recognizes their work while not placing an undue burden on residents, homeowners, and citizens who pay for these services through taxation,” Pitkethly added.

CUPE Local 1267 represents roughly 352 municipal workers in Mission, including public works, parks and RCMP support services.
