World Cup midfielder Berhalter transferred from Vancouver Whitecaps to Middlesbrough
VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have transferred U.S. World Cup midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to English Championship club Middlesbrough, the team announced Tuesday.
The 25-year-old leaves after four-and-a-half seasons in Vancouver, with the Whitecaps retaining a sell-on percentage in any future transfer. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said Berhalter’s development and consistent performances made it inevitable he would attract interest from clubs in Europe.
“We have been in open and ongoing discussions with Sebastian and his representatives about his future,” Schuster said in a statement. “It was always clear that if the right opportunity to move to Europe presented itself, he wanted the chance to pursue that challenge.”
