CHILLIWACK – The operator of the Cheam Leisure Centre in Chilliwack says the pool remains closed after an undisclosed incident last week.

The YMCA says glass was found at the bottom of the pool following what it called an “unexpected” incident on Monday night, July 13.

The Y says staff made an initial effort to remove the glass, but more pieces were discovered during a follow-up inspection the next morning on Tuesday, July 14.

Following an assessment by YMCA facilities personnel, staff determined that the pool had to be drained, cleaned, refilled, and inspected to ensure it was safe to reopen to the community.

“While this work was being completed, we encountered a critical failure in one of the boiler components, which is responsible for maintaining a safe pool temperature. Therefore, the reopening date for the pool is still being determined,” the YMCA said.

Rec centre staff apologized for the temporary closure during the summer months.

“Once again, we wish to sincerely apologize for this inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure our pool is safe before reopening,” the YMCA said.
