Body of missing hiker recovered in Whatcom County, while B.C. hiker remains missing SW of Mt. Baker

NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK/WHATCOM COUNTY– The body of a 55-year-old missing hiker was recovered over the weekend in a national forest near Ross Lake in Washington state, while a missing B.C. hiker in Washington remains unaccounted for.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office announced over the weekend that the body of Steven Dorsett was recovered in the national forest. Dorsett was last heard from on June 24 near the Canyon Creek trailhead and had planned to be gone for a maximum of 10 days.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to the many agencies and volunteers who assisted throughout this operation and recovery efforts, including Whatcom County Search & Rescue Council, Whatcom Co Search & Rescue 4×4 Unit, Cristina Woodworth with Central Okanagan Search & Rescue, Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council, Everett Mountain Rescue, Skagit Mountain Rescue, the National Park Rangers, Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team, and the Snohomish County Swift Water team.,” WCSO said. “We are grateful to everyone who contributed their time, resources, and support during this operation. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Steven’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

A B.C. hiker from Kamloops remains missing. The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said Gursimran Randhawa went hiking in late June in Whatcom County but hadn’t yet returned. His last known location was the South Twin southwest of Mount Baker.

His vehicle was located on the Middle Fork Road in Whatcom County. His vehicle is a Toyota Tacoma, newer model, and appears to have the B.C. license plate of PJ015F.

On Monday, July 6, WCSO said multiple agencies joined the search for Randhawa, described as a mountaineer, in the Twin Sisters mountain range in central Whatcom County the prior weekend. Local teams from Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council and Whatcom County Search & Rescue 4×4 Unit were accompanied by regional and state partners like Skagit Mountain Rescue Unit, Everett Mountain Rescue, Seattle Mountain Rescue, Tacoma Mountain Rescue and Olympic Mountain Rescue to canvas and comb terrain where Randhawa was believed to be rock scrambling.

On Sunday, July 5, mountain rescue teams were flown to the South Twin Sister by Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team to search the Sisters Glacier on foot and by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (drone). Additional aerial searching was conducted by CBP Air and Marine Operations, who have supported the search since the onset of rescue operations.

“The search for Mr. Randhawa continues, and anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to reach out to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office via 911,” WCSO said.
