ABBOTSFORD – A 36-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed the driver of a vehicle that struck his dog who had been running into moving traffic this past weekend in Abbotsford.

AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says officers responded to a reported disturbance in the 33900 block of Gladys Avenue Saturday afternoon, July 4, at 3:46 p.m. When officers arrived, they determined that one person had been stabbed.

Police learned that the incident began after a dog belonging to 36-year-old Tyler Craig ran into moving traffic and was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped to render assistance and provide support after the collision, Sgt. Walker said.

While the driver was assisting, a crowd gathered in the area. Police say the suspect subsequently approached the driver and stabbed him. Craig and the driver were not known to each other prior to the incident.

The dog did not suffer any serious injuries. The victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly emotions can escalate into serious violence. While the circumstances surrounding the injury of a family pet can be distressing, acts of violence are never an acceptable response,” Sgt. Walker said. “Choosing violence places innocent people at risk and can have life-altering consequences for everyone involved. AbbyPD remains committed to ensuring the safety of our community and holding those who engage in violent criminal acts accountable.”

Craig is now facing a charge of assault with a weapon.
