ABBOTSFORD — An Abbotsford nonprofit is asking for the community’s help in feeding local children ahead of their summer vacation.

Archway Community Services’ Summer Starfish Program is an initiative that helps kids get reliable food through the summer months, when they lose access to school meals.

“For many families, school meal programs are a lifeline,” said Rebecca Thuro, manager of Food Security at Archway. “When those programs pause for the summer, it can leave a significant gap. The Summer Starfish program helps ensure children don’t have to go hungry during that time.”

Each pack from the program is handed out biweekly until the fall semester and contains nutritious foods such as cereal, canned protein, soups, and more.

Five hundred children are expected to register this summer, with the packs supporting an average of more than 750 children weekly throughout the school year.

“The support we receive from the community makes all the difference in creating stability for families and helping children thrive,” said Thuro. “Every donation helps more children in Abbotsford have consistent access to the food they need this summer.”

Residents and businesses are asked to help the initiative by visiting the program webpage.

First pack distributions are set to begin on July 8.
