ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say a 34-year-old prolific offender who was connected to a series of property crime-related offences in the Sumas Prairie area in early 2025 has been sentenced.

According to a statement from Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, police in Abbotsford observed a troubling trend during the first five months of 2025 that saw a 67 per cent increase in property crime-related offences. In response, AbbyPD’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) had executed two search warrants at residences in Abbotsford and Mission in June 2025. These warrants marked the beginning of a focused effort to hold those responsible for this surge in crime accountable, Sgt. Walker said.

Over the following months, members of CRU worked tirelessly, employing a range of investigative strategies and followed the evidence wherever it led. This effort was supported through funding provided by the Provincial Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) Program.

One of the suspects connected to those property crimes was 34-year-old prolific offender Cody Ashton, who was charged in November 2025 with break and enter, assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, motor vehicle theft, theft over $5,000 and mischief.

Sgt. Walker tells Fraser Valley Today that Cody Ashton was sentenced on Monday, May 25 to a 20-month conditional sentence order and a 12-month probation order. Sgt. Walker says for the first six months, Ashton will be under house arrest 24 hours a day as part of his conditional sentence order.

“This investigation was made possible through Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) Provincial Funding,” Sgt. Walker told Fraser Valley Today. “Investigations of this nature require a significant investment of time, coordination, and investigative expertise to build a thorough case to ensure the offender is held responsible. We are appreciative of the Province’s continued support through this funding stream, which plays a critical role in strengthening our ability to investigate complex matters and, ultimately, enhance public safety within our community.”
