CHILLIWACK — Residents are invited to take part in a fundraising walk to restore a beloved mural defaced on the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

“Inez is a Stó꞉lō woman, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a cousin, and an auntie. She is loved,” wrote Amber Price in an earlier GoFundMe to repair the damage.

“It is a representation of Stó꞉lō and Indigenous women in this community, and beyond. Defacing it was a hurtful statement seemingly directed at Indigenous women, and we won’t let that pass without it being named.”

Police are now trying to find out who was responsible for the act, but in the meantime, the community is hoping to pursue all avenues to get its vibrant art back.

On Sunday, May 10, Chilliwack Tours will be hosting a special guided walking tour with proceeds donated to the organizations behind the murals and helping fund artist Kevin Ledo’s return to the city so he can repair and enhance the artwork.

“We were heartbroken to see the recent damage to one of the most important murals we have in Chilliwack and wanted to do something to help repair the damage,” said local guide Michael Berger, who will be leading the tour.

The tour will make its way through the Central Village area to District 1881 and feature the work of Indigenous art and artists.

“We’re appreciative of Chilliwack Tours for raising money to help restore this mural,” says Lise Oakley, executive director of the Chilliwack Mural Festival. “This guided walk will also help people connect to the meaning behind the murals in a truly memorable way.”
