LANGLEY – The province announced Wednesday morning that a new 300-seat addition costing over $40 million will be built at a secondary school in the Willoughby neighbourhood in Langley.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Infrastructure, the three-storey addition at R.E. Mountain Secondary will include new classrooms as well as specialty learning spaces, creating more opportunities for students to select electives, such as art and cooking, that further support their learning and growth.

The cost is estimated at approximately $42 million.

The new three-storey addition will include:

* new special-education spaces to support students with diverse needs

* seven general instruction classrooms

* a media and technology room, art room, culinary lab, two general science rooms and a computer room, enabling the school to expand elective options for students

* a designated dropoff and pickup area

* designing the addition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 82% and increasing energy efficiency

* new parking spots for future charging stations for electric vehicles

“As we welcome more new families to our community, we know that this addition will help alleviate enrolment pressures and ensure students, now and in the future, can continue to learn in a healthy, safe and inclusive environment in Langley,” said Candy Ashdown, chair of the Langley Board of Education.

The province is investing approximately $42 million in the addition.

Construction on the new addition is expected to start in the summer of 2027 and might be ready for students in late 2028.
