Abbotsford Police respond to over a dozen domestic violence reports during Easter weekend

ABBOTSFORD – Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says AbbyPD officers fielded over a dozen calls involving intimate partner violence over the Easter long weekend, amid 445 calls for service between Friday evening and Tuesday morning.

In addition to the concerning number of domestic violence reports, Sgt. Walker says police recorded seven assaults, eight missing persons reports, a pair of break and enters and 24 thefts, on top of four vehicle collisions.

A primary objective throughout the evening on Friday night was impaired driving enforcement. In total, nine impaired drivers were removed. An excessive speeder was also impounded. Officers arrested one individual on an outstanding immigration warrant, and a a prohibited driver was arrested.

Later in the weekend on Saturday night, officers assisted AFRS with two fires—one involving a large barn in the west end of the city and another at the Peardonville homeless camp. Officers also responded to a serious stabbing at Jubilee Park, where one man was transported to hospital. This investigation remains ongoing.

During the Sunday daytime shift, a driver fled from an attempted traffic stop initiated by an RCMP K-9 officer. The suspect was quickly arrested a short time later after stopping for gas. Criminal charges for dangerous driving & flight from police have been recommended.

Later that day, AbbyPD officers responded to 2 lost hikers on Sumas Mountain Sunday evening. With assistance from the Air 1 helicopter, the hikers were quickly located safe.

On Monday, AbbyPD officers arrested a prohibited driver, and during foot patrols in the downtown core, a known offender was arrested on an outstanding warrant. On Monday evening, officers responded to a border runner near Zero Avenue and Mount Lehman Road, arresting one man.
