Emergency room at Mission Memorial hospital operating under reduced hours through long weekend

MISSION — The emergency department at Mission Memorial Hospital will temporarily reduce its hours through the Easter long weekend due to staffing levels.

Beginning Wednesday (April 1) through Monday, the emergency department will operate normally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., emergency-trained nurses will remain on site to assist walk-in patients with basic care, help redirect patients and arrange transfers for those with urgent needs to nearby hospitals.

Residents with non-life-threatening concerns can access the community’s Urgent and Primary Care Centre or call Fraser Health Virtual Care for advice.

Fraser Health says people experiencing a medical emergency outside the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. operating hours should call 911, where paramedics will assess and transport patients to the most appropriate facility.

Staff shortages are behind the situation, according to the Fraser Health statement. The health authority says it is continuing physician recruitment, supported by national and international efforts. Several candidates are currently in the hiring process and are expected to improve coverage in the coming months.
