ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Police Department has conducted housekeeping checks on passing big rigs as commercial vehicles headlined traffic news this past week.

Traffic enforcement officers partnered with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) and the Passenger Transportation Branch for an enforcement initiative on commercial vehicles on Tuesday (Mar. 24).

As a result, police identified 44 violations and issued 30 violation tickets for offences including speeding, insecure cargo and no driver’s license.

Nine vehicle inspections were also conducted, along with nine notices and orders issued, five vehicles removed from service and one vehicle towed.

“AbbyPD remains committed to proactive commercial vehicle safety enforcement to help reduce collisions, protect all road users, and ensure commercial vehicles operating within Abbotsford meet provincial safety standards,” said AbbyPD.

“Partnerships such as this allow police and regulatory agencies to work together to address safety issues before they result in serious incidents.”

Commercial vehicles were featured in a number of recent stories last week, ranging from a semi fire on the Coquihalla Highway to two overpass strikes on Highway 1.

The B.C. government has listed the earlier strike as due to the driver not lowering the vehicle’s equipment for transport. The firm, MNS Equipment Solutions Ltd., received violation tickets and a suspension that has since been lifted.
