Abbotsford PD confirms fatality after motorist allegedly flees traffic stop, later strikes tree

ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford say one person has been pronounced deceased after a motorist who allegedly fled from a traffic stop initiated by police later lost control of their vehicle and struck a tree late Monday night.

According to a statement, an Abbotsford PD officer attempted to stop a speeding vehicle travelling eastbound on Maclure Road near Townline Road in Abbotsford at approximately 11:37 p.m. on Monday night, Mar. 16.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, a Dodge Ram, failed to stop and fled from the attempted traffic stop. Moments later, the vehicle lost control and struck a tree near the intersection of Maclure Road and Old Yale Road.

Police can confirm the driver of the vehicle was located deceased at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Personnel from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) have been called in to assist with the investigation. The Abbotsford Police Department has also notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIOBC) of B.C.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages as police work to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident. Maclure Road, between Townline Road and Clearbrook Road, remains closed Tuesday morning as officers continue to gather evidence.
