Langley RCMP aware of alleged threats made at local middle school

LANGLEY – A spokesperson for the Langley RCMP detachment says police are aware of alleged threats made by a student toward other students at a Langley middle school last week.

A Langley parent told Fraser Valley Today this past week that her son and three other students received a death threat from a fellow student, a male, in Grade 6 at a Langley middle school.

“My son and three others have been threatened to be killed today,” the parent said on Wednesday, Feb. 18. “Twice before, he wanted to kill the entire class. He’s made stabbing motions with a pencil. He has said he wanted to kill someone’s grandmother today.”

The parent, who asked not to be identified due to security concerns, said the alleged threats are beyond troubling.

“It’s gut wrenching. Our kids struggle to attend school over something happening,” the parent said, adding that she believes the student was suspended, but will likely be back in SD35 (Langley) schools.

Langley RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom says the detachment is aware of a police report being filed over the alleged threats.

“The Langley RCMP is aware of the report that you are referring to involving youth,” Sgt. Sharoom wrote in an email to Fraser Valley Today. “All reports of threats are treated seriously and are addressed immediately to determine credibility and risk. Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act and privacy legislation, we are not in a position to release further details.”

The alleged threats came less than two weeks after a deadly shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., amplifying the climate around school safety in British Columbia.

“We understand that the recent events in Tumbler Ridge have heightened sensitivity around school safety, therefore we encourage anyone with direct information pertaining to any incidents to reach out to Police directly,” Sgt. Sharoom said. “Furthermore, we continue to be engaged with schools in Langley and should any parent or guardian have any questions, they are more than welcome to speak with one of our school liaison officers.”

The parent advised Fraser Valley Today Monday night (Feb. 23) that the male student who made the alleged threats is back at school.

A spokesperson for the Langley School District offered very little information in response to an inquiry from Fraser Valley Today, which asked what parents should expect in a situation like this.

“Due to the protection of privacy, the District is unable to share information about any students in our schools,” the Langley School District said. “In general, when there is a breach of the Student Code of Conduct, the District has procedures that schools follow.”

Langley School District’s Student Code of Conduct states, “No student shall or attempt to verbally, physically or sexually assault, threaten, or intimidate any person.” It also says, “No student shall involve themselves in or promote any malicious or persistent verbal, physical or sexual comments or acts that are hurtful, degrading, discriminatory, or offensive to an individual.” The Langley School District says in the student code of conduct that it is “committed to fostering safe and caring schools that promote mutual respect, cooperation, and social responsibility, and support optimal learning.”
