No serious injuries after drunk driver rear-ends citizen patrol unit in Maple Ridge

MAPLE RIDGE — Ridge Meadows RCMP are lauding the quick thinking of their civilian volunteer unit after it was involved in a three-car collision a couple of weeks ago.

On January 17, at about 8:30 p.m., police received a report of the incident on Dewdney Trunk Road at 232 Street in Maple Ridge. 

Three volunteers were in a marked Crime Prevention Unit vehicle when they were rear-ended.

The volunteers then checked on all parties and looked for injuries before exchanging information with the suspect driver, whom they immediately believed was impaired by alcohol.

When officers arrived, the driver confirmed their involvement in the collision and was asked to provide a breath sample.

They have since been arrested, fined and issued a 90-day roadside ban, with their vehicle impounded for 30 days.

“These volunteers not only did a tremendous job of taking the appropriate steps following a collision but also had the foresight to make detailed observations when reporting it to police,” says Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. Martin Guay. 

“We appreciate their initiative which led to the removal of an impaired driver off our roads, and once again highlights the effectiveness of having trained volunteers out in our community reporting on public safety matters.”

There were no serious injuries, and the volunteers returned to the detachment once the scene cleared.
