Chilliwack hospital upgrades X-ray imaging technology suite

CHILLIWACK — Some residents won’t have to endure long wait times for live X-ray imaging services after the opening of an upgraded fluoroscopy suite at Chilliwack General Hospital.

Fluoroscopy is a newer tool that uses real-time X-ray video imaging and lower radiation to show what’s happening inside a body during procedures, such as joint injections for people with mobility issues.

“Being able to access this procedure here at this site reduces the barriers for people travelling,” said Kaitlin Marochi, interim clinical practice leader for the hospital’s Speech Language Pathology unit. “We’ll have better access and more time in this room to do these exams.”

For the first time in Chilliwack, the hospital will also begin offering modified barium swallow studies. Patients with swallowing difficulties, such as those who have suffered a stroke and other neurological or age-related conditions, may need these studies to help speech-language pathologists create individual treatment plans.

“When someone is struggling with swallowing issues, even a short trip can feel overwhelming,” explains Bernice Oxley, operations director for Lower Mainland Medical Imaging at Chilliwack General. “Being able to complete modified barium swallow studies close to home makes the whole experience easier and more comfortable.”

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation and its donors contributed $200,000 toward the fluoroscopy suite and $16,000 toward the specialized swallowing chair.

The Siemens ARTIS ZE fluoroscopy technology went into service on November 13, 2025, with swallow studies set to begin in the coming weeks.
