Chilliwack road closed after vehicle strikes power pole on South Sumas Road overnight

CHILLIWACK — A section of South Sumas Road in Chilliwack has been closed on New Year’s Day after a vehicle reportedly struck a power pole overnight, leading to a power outage that affected over 1,400 customers.

According to Pulse Point, B.C. Emergency Health Services were notified at 1:06 a.m. about a motor vehicle incident in the 44700 block of South Sumas Road in Chilliwack. One Chilliwack ambulance, 206A2N, was assigned. It was cleared from the incident at 2:07 a.m.

Scanner traffic indicated a car sheared off a pole as a result of the motor vehicle incident.

South Sumas Road between Unsworth Road and closer to Tyson Road has been closed for several hours. It remained closed as of 7:50 a.m. Thursday morning.

BC Hydro crews are currently on scene repairing the pole.

At one point, 1,442 BC Hydro customers lost power due to the motor vehicle incident.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday morning, 150 customers remain without electricity. Power is expected to be restored by noon for these remaining 150 customers.

Antony Paller reported on Facebook that the light signal at South Sumas and Tyson is not working at all, not even flashing, meaning motorists need to remember to stop at the four-way intersection.
