City of Chilliwack says road upgrades near Yale/Hocking substantially completed

CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack says road upgrades and public works improvements to two roads near Yale Road and Hocking Avenue are now substantially completed.

In its December transportation newsletter, the city says a multi-use pathway and road upgrades have been incorporated into McIntosh Drive (near A.D. Rundle Middle School) and Hocking Avenue, near Bozzini’s Restaurant.

This project, which began in October, is part of an active transportation design project meant to improve cycling facilities, creating new routes and road safety.

This project primarily consists of a multi-use pathway that connects the Valley Rail Trail to Edward Street. The city says the multi-use pathway and road upgrades on Hocking Avenue (south side) and McIntosh Drive (south and west sides) create a safe route for active transportation users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Among other improvements, a new crosswalk was installed on Hocking Avenue and McIntosh Drive to provide a safe crossing.

The Hocking Avenue upgrades consist of the following improvements:

• Full-depth asphalt removal and reinstallation.
• Removal of existing curb, gutter, sidewalk, and roadway.
• Installation of a new barrier-type curb and gutter, continuous asphalt multi-use pathway, driveway restoration, wheelchair letdowns and sections of landscape boulevard.
• Storm drainage works including catch basin relocations and installations and tie-in to storm mains.
• Roadway and pathway road markings and signage changes.
• Traffic signal upgrades including the removal of 4 existing signal poles and bases and replacement with 2 new signal poles.

A multi-use pathway was installed along McIntosh Drive from Hocking Avenue to 45530 McIntosh Drive to connect to Edward Street through the tunnel.

The pathway was built within the road right of way with no changes to the existing parking in the area. Residents will still have access to on-street parking.

The McIntosh Drive project included the following works:

• Full-depth asphalt removal and reinstallation.
• Installation of new barrier-type concrete curb and gutter, a continuous 3m-wide asphalt multi-use pathway, concrete driveway and wheelchair letdowns and grass and tree lined boulevard.
• Replacement and commissioning of an existing street light with service base and relocation of 4 additional street lights.
• Storm drainage works including relocation, adjustment of existing catch basins and installation of new catch basins.
• Changes to roadway markings and signage.
