CHILLIWACK — Police say a 27-year-old man has been killed in the serious motor vehicle incident that cut power to thousands of Chilliwack residents Friday night (Dec. 26).

Chilliwack Fire, police, four BCEHS ambulances and an airlift were paged out at around 10:15 p.m. after a white Ford pickup truck with one occupant lost control and crashed into a power pole on Yale Road and Banford Road, heading towards Rosedale.

The man was found dead at the scene.

Images from the scene showed the pole ending up slanted against the vehicle.

“While alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this accident, speed may be a contributing factor,” said S/Sgt Darryl Peppler.

Peppler also told Fraser Valley Today that the incident did not result from a police chase and that the IIO is not involved.

BC Hydro reported 1,511 customers without power from east of Wedgewood Drive to West of McGrath Road shortly after the incident. An additional 1,690 east of Camp River Road lost power from a motor vehicle accident at 12:47 a.m.

The area between Banford and Prest was closed for several hours while the Chilliwack RCMP investigated the accident with a Collision Analyst.

Next of kin have been notified.
