IIO investigating Christmas Day fatality in Surrey

SURREY — B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating a fatal motor vehicle incident involving Surrey police.

In a news release, the IIO states the Surrey Police Service informed their investigators that the collision occurred around 6 a.m. on Christmas Day. Officers were leaving a gas station in the 10800 block of 132 Street. According to Surrey Police, a woman was struck during the incident. The Canadian Press is reporting the woman was a pedestrian.

Emergency Health Services attended and transported the woman to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The IIO is a civilian agency responsible for investigating police-involved incidents that result in death or serious harm. It says it was notified shortly after the death occurred.
