Power outage in remote area SE of Hope

BC Hydro battles extraordinary barriers in restoring power to 160+ customers SE of Hope near Manning Park

CROWSNEST HIGHWAY/MANNING PARK — The longest current power outage in all of British Columbia involves an extraordinary effort on the part of BC Hydro crews.

According to BC Hydro’s online dashboard the past week, 166 customers lost power on Monday, Dec. 15 at 3:19 p.m. due to a mudslide or snow slide.

The affected area is southeast of Sunshine Valley stretching to parts of Manning Park and into the small community of Eastgate, if BC Hydro’s outage map is indeed correct.

According to updates on its website and on social media, BC Hydro repair crews have been hindered in restoring power by a mudslide, the closure of Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton, and recent snowfall. The downed power line is located near Manning Park.

“Because of the remote location, we’ve brought in additional crews, snow‑clearing equipment, and a mobile medical unit to ensure the safety of crews working on site. Crews expect to have power restored to the 166 impacted customers by Saturday at 6 p.m.,” BC Hydro wrote over the weekend on X/Twitter.

As of Sunday night, Dec. 21, BC Hydro has provided an updated explanation as to why power is still out for these 164 customers. The original number was 166 customers, but they’ve since revised it to 164.

“Damage is extensive and requires replacement of infrastructure (e.g. power poles) and/or multiple crews to be brought to the site,” BC Hydro said.

BC Hydro has revised its timeline for restoring power to Monday, December 22 at 4 p.m. If it restores power by then, it will have been a full week that customers lacked electricity.
