MAPLE RIDGE — The community is rallying to support a grieving mother after a young woman was killed in a fatal crash in Maple Ridge earlier this month.

Nineteen-year-old Angeleka Loxam died at the scene on Saturday, December 6, after her vehicle struck a light pole near the Golden Ears Bridge – leaving loved ones mourning the loss of a compassionate and driven young woman with a deep commitment to helping others.

“Angeleka was somebody that you can’t lie to,” said Sabrina Vergara, a long-time family friend. “You look into her eyes, and she looks straight into your soul, and they don’t judge you; she’s never judged me.”

Vergara said Loxam aspired to become a criminal lawyer and was already living out her values through service, working at a nursing home and volunteering much of her free time with a local mission society.

At the time of the crash, the young Surrey resident had been visiting a friend and was returning home to see her family when tragedy struck.

“She was just on her way home to go see her grandma,” Vergara explained. “Her grandpa had passed away two days prior as well […] It just came as a shock because she’s very responsible.”

Supporting a grieving mother

Loxam’s death comes after another profound loss for her family. Her father passed away four years ago, leaving Angeleka and her mother, Cherry, deeply bonded to each other.

“Their relationship was beautiful. Her and her daughter did absolutely everything together, like one didn’t come without the other.”

Now, with no immediate family, friends are stepping in to support Cherry through her grief.

“She was just numb,” said Vergara. “She lost her soul. That was her best friend, and she’s suffering for sure […] She has counseling and I’m helping as much as I can to keep her afloat.”

The funeral and related expenses are expected to exceed $30,000.

A GoFundMe has since been launched to help cover costs and provide financial relief to her family following the tragedy. As of publication, it has raised roughly 83 per cent of its $18,000 goal.

“We’re just hoping to spread the word and hope that people can feel what she’s going through […] No mom should have to go through that – ever.”
