LYTTON — The federal government has announced its latest commitment to rebuilding Lytton after the wildfire that affected the village and its neighbouring Indigenous communities in the summer of 2021.

On Friday, December 19, Wade Grant, parliamentary secretary to the minister of environment and climate change, joined Chief Jordan Spinks of the Kanaka Bar Indian Band to announce the $14.9 million investment into the construction of a new Chief Spintlum Elders Lodge.

“Safe, stable housing is fundamental to health and well-being as people age, and the rebuilding of the Chief Spintlum Elders Lodge reflects this understanding,” said Josie Osborne, provincial minister of health.

“This federal investment will help ensure more Elders in the Lytton area can access culturally safe care that is rooted in community, connection and Indigenous ways of knowing.”

The new Lodge will be built on the former site, which was destroyed in the fire. It will have six assisted living units and seven independent Elder Living Units.

Fire-resistant materials and net-zero standards are also priorities for the new site, with officials incorporating renewable energy and battery storage to help protect elders from wildfire risks and climate change.

Ottawa committed $64 million in June 2022 to support the rebuilding of Lytton through the construction of net-zero, fire-resistant buildings.
