Elderly man robbed in Abbotsford after offering to help street person who seemed to be in distress
ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford say they are investigating a robbery in which an elderly man stopped to help an unhoused person but was robbed of his belongings in October.
According to a statement from AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, AbbyPD patrol officers responded to a reported robbery at Gladwin Road and South Fraser Way on Monday, Oct. 20 at about 10:48 a.m.
Police say the victim, a 79-year-old man, stated that he stopped to assist an unhoused individual who appeared to be in distress. When he approached, the man and an accomplice assaulted and robbed him of his belongings. During the distressing incident, a motorist driving a white Dodge Ram pickup truck (shown in the picture accompanying this story) briefly intervened. However, before officers arrived, the driver left the scene without speaking to police.
Investigators say they are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying this witness driver, as they may have crucial information to advance the investigation.
