FRASER VALLEY/WEST VANCOUVER — A spokesperson for the B.C. Highway Patrol says a Kelowna man is facing court and criminal charges after he allegedly drove impaired on Highway 1 between Chilliwack and West Vancouver Sunday morning with his two pre-teen sons in his pickup.

According to a statement from BCHP spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, police say the man was stopped following a number of complaints about him being allegedly impaired.

Cpl. McLaughlin says multiple agencies from Chilliwack to West Vancouver were contacted on Sunday, Nov. 2 about a brown Dodge Ram 1500 driving erratically on Highway 1 westbound. Just before 11 a.m. Sunday morning, BC Highway Patrol located a brown Dodge Ram 1500 as it pulled up to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal in West Van.

With assistance from West Vancouver Police, a 55-year-old Kelowna man was arrested for alleged impaired driving and prohibited driving. The man’s pre-teen boys were in the vehicle with him.

Cpl. McLaughlin says West Vancouver Police fed the boys and contacted the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development who promptly stepped in to help.

“Highway safety is a community effort. People called 911 to guide us to the vehicle, and we worked with our policing partners to end this safely,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “It’s a sad situation, especially when children are involved, but it’s important that people see their police agencies working well together.”

“The West Vancouver Police Department is grateful to the members of the public who alerted authorities promptly,” said Sgt. Chris Bigland with West Vancouver Police. “Driving while intoxicated presents incredible risks, and we’re pleased we were able to work with our partners to get this driver off the road before anyone was hurt”.

The Kelowna driver has not yet been formally charged.
