CHILLIWACK — There will be a new chief at Cheam First Nation east of Chilliwack once voters cast their ballots under a new custom election code later this fall.

An election will be held on Saturday, December 6. In-person voting, online voting and mail-in ballots will be available to Cheam First Nation eligible voters.

Cheam First Nation (Xwchíyò:m) has released the names of its candidates for the position of chief and council. Current Chief Darwin Douglas is not listed as one of the candidates for chief.

Instead, current Councillors Andrew Victor and Michael J. Victor are seeking to serve as the elected chief.

Councillor Andrew Victor tells Fraser Valley Today that current Chief Darwin Douglas was nominated but chose to withdraw as a candidate.

Councillor Victor says this will be Cheam’s first election that it is no longer under the Indian Band election regulations. Earlier this year, the Cheam members approved the Cheam Custom Election Code by referendum.

Cheam First Nation voters will select councillors from the following names: Allison Calliou, Jennifer Campbell, Bruce Douglas, Lisa Douglas, Daniel Edwards, Luke J. Pike and Catana Tommy.

There will be an all-candidates meeting on November 22 at Cheam First Nation to better inform local band voters of the candidates’ platforms and what they seek to achieve if elected.
