Downed tree cuts power to thousands of Chilliwack residents

CHILLIWACK — Over 4,300 Chilliwack residents woke up without power today (Oct. 26).

BC Hydro says a tree went down across its wires overnight, cutting power to customers south of Prairie Central Road, east of Hopedale Road, west of Elkview Road and North of Chilliwack Lake Road.

Power has been off since 2:11 a.m. Crews have been assigned to work on the area at the time of writing.

Spokeswoman Mora Scott told The Canadian Press Saturday that downed trees are not uncommon this time of year.

“At this time of year, trees do still have a lot of leaves on them, which adds to the weight and makes them kind of more susceptible on the wind,” she said. “The other piece that we’ve obviously been keeping a close eye on is the drought that’s impacted B.C. over the past several years.”

“It has left many dead and damaged trees, and those trees are much more susceptible to high winds than healthy trees.”

Chilliwack has seen its fair share of outages over the past few weeks. On Friday, over 2,200 customers from Yarrow to east Abbotsford lost power– also due to a downed tree.
