UPDATE: The motorcyclist from Cloverdale who was airlifted to Abbotsford Regional Hospital after a motorcycle accident in Yarrow Tuesday night wrote on Facebook that he suffered multiple fractured vertebrae, a few fractured ribs, and a fractured shoulder blade and collar bone.

The man, whose first name is Tom, said he was following his supervisor and knew the route where the accident occurred. He was driving a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad 1500.

“I turned south at the 4-way [stop] in Yarrow. Following my supervisor who was in a car. Bike went too wide, I hit the soft shoulder. Then it was done,” Tom said. “I was going about 30-35(?). I’ve driven the section a few times. I know the curve and the bank. I don’t do drugs and I’m not gonna drink and ride.”

He spoke with Fraser Valley Today Thursday morning and said he’s in good spirits while he recovers from the injuries. He says he’s able to stand and move around.

On Facebook, Tom said he did not lose consciousness nor was he ever not alert.

“I went down the bank and landed hard into some jagged boulders. Thankfully they brought me to a stop earlier,” he said. “I just remained coherent to PPT (person, place and time in medical terminology). I work in the medical field… kinda. I remember flying through the air a foot or so.”

He says a bystander who was right behind him called 9-1-1 to notify authorities.

“I remember hollering to the bystander who was right behind me. Stating who I was. Stating I’m not ok. She was a guardian angel. She called 9-1-1,” Tom said. “Fire department was great with the rescue. Down to me to comfort and check on me. Then onto a board with a rope system. Up a ladder I went. Paramedics felt I was too critical to go by ground. Flight crew agreed.”

CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson says a motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital Tuesday evening after he appeared to lose control of his vehicle, causing him to go approximately 20 feet down a hill in Yarrow.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill, police received a report of a single vehicle incident at Wilson Road and Majuba Hill Road at about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday.

A witness told police the motorcycle rider was obeying the speed limit. However, at the top of the hill at that location he appeared to lose control of the motorcycle and go over the embankment an estimated 20 feet down a hill.

The operator of the vehicle has been identified as a 38-year-old male from Cloverdale.

“Driver inexperience likely played a roll in the incident,” Sgt. Mulvihill said.

A B.C. EHS helicopter landed at Yarrow Community School shortly after 7 p.m.

Scanner traffic indicated the male was conscious and breathing, but first responders needed to undertake “significant extraction” due to him falling 20 feet down the embankment.

The male was airlifted to Abbotsford General Hospital in stable condition, Sgt. Mulvihill said.
