ABBOTSFORD — A spokesperson for the Abbotsford Police Department says officers responded to a multitude of fireworks-related calls across the city Tuesday night, including instances where flight operations at YXX were disrupted.

According to a statement from AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, police say they responded to nearly 50 calls of fireworks being set off across various neighbourhoods – including incidents that impacted Abbotsford International Airport – all while managing a number of serious incidents.

“In several instances, these fireworks disrupted flight operations at the Abbotsford Airport — a matter of significant concern for public safety and aviation,” Sgt. Walker said. “AbbyPD officers, in partnership with City of Abbotsford Bylaw Enforcement officers, continue to actively enforce the community-wide ban on fireworks. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to address these violations, maintain public safety, and prioritize calls for service based on urgency and risk to the community.”

From 5 p.m. Tuesday evening to 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers attended 128 calls, including:

•Weapons-related incidents involving firearms

•Multiple mental health crises, including individuals threatening suicide

•Assaults

•Several motor vehicle collisions

•Missing persons

•Numerous disturbances

•A border runner

•Impaired drivers

•A sudden death in our community (non-suspicious)

“I’d like to take a moment to recognize the frustration many of you have expressed regarding the excessive discharge of fireworks in your neighbourhoods,” Sgt. Walker said. “Last night was particularly demanding for our Patrol Officers, who responded to a high volume of calls for service. Given the increased demand on our frontline operations, additional officers were called in to assist. Our team worked incredibly hard throughout the evening, managing a wide range of incidents while maintaining public safety across the city.”
