Greyhound aims to restart bus service in the Fraser Valley, with stops in Hope, Abbotsford

CHILLIWACK — Greyhound Lines, under its German-based intercity coach service parent company Flix SE, is proposing to operate 84 weekly trips across B.C. through four interconnected routes and feature bus stops in Hope, Abbotsford and Surrey.

One of the routes includes two round trips between Kamloops and Kelowna, operating five days a week, with stops in Vernon and West Kelowna.

Greyhound is also proposing one daily round trip between Kamloops and Vancouver, including stops in Merritt, Hope, Abbotsford and Surrey.

A route from Vancouver to Calgary with one daily round trip and one round trip operating six days a week is also planned, with stops in Merritt, Kamloops, Chase, Blind Bay, Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Revelstoke included.

The fourth and final proposed route between Kelowna and Vancouver is projected to have two round trips operating six days a week, including stops in West Kelowna, Merritt, Hope, Abbotsford and Surrey.

Greyhound Canada pulled out of Western provinces in 2018, including in B.C. The intercity bus service company ceased operations in 2021, with the American-based Greyhound Lines providing cross-border routes. Flix SE purchased Greyhound Lines in 2021.

In an attachment to Vernon council for their regular meeting Tuesday (Oct. 14), Greyhound Lines says the new, proposed approach differs from Greyhound Canada’s model.

“Rather than operating as a single corporate entity vulnerable to market pressures, [Greyhound Lines] will contract with established local operators who provide vehicles, drivers, and regional expertise,” Andrew Miller, FlixBus’ senior manager of public affairs writes. “This model, proven successful across Flix SE’s global network, creates sustainable operations by leveraging local knowledge while providing the technology platform and network coordination that enables seamless passenger experience.”

Greyhound Lines says it’s committed to ensuring full accessibility for all passengers, maintaining scheduled service and providing affordable fares.

Flix SE was asking Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming to send a letter of support to the BC Passenger Transportation Board as the company prepares its application.

Flix SE declined an interview with CFJC Today but provided a statement:

In every region, we work closely with local authorities and follow all regulatory requirements and process. We are excited about the prospect of potentially serving residents of British Columbia and appreciate the support from local stakeholders as we explore opportunities in the market.”

Currently, Kamloops has intercity bus services to Calgary, Kelowna, Prince George and Vancouver via Ebus. Kamloops also has a stop between Rider Express’ Calgary-Vancouver route.
