ABBOTSFORD — A 32-year-old woman who was struck by a truck after riding her bike on South Parallel Road in Abbotsford in late September has died and left behind two kids.

According to an Abbotsford Police Department news release, frontline officers responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on South Parallel Road just east of Whatcom Road on Sunday evening, Sept. 28 at about 9:58 p.m. Emergency personnel arrived to find a 32-year-old female cyclist suffering from life-threatening injuries after being struck by a grey Chevy Avalanche. She was airlifted to a hospital. The driver of the Chevy Avalanche and his passenger remained at the scene and are cooperating with investigators. Impairment is not believed to be a factor at this time; however, poor lighting conditions in the area are considered a factor in this collision.

Shannon Venchuck now says in a GoFundMe fundraising appeal that it was her daughter, Vanessa Venchuk, who was struck by the vehicle.

“She was riding her bike on South Parallel Road when she was hit by a truck, receiving catastrophic injuries,” Shannon Venchuk said. “She was air lifted to Royal Columbian in New Westminster. Along the way, her heart stopped and it took paramedics six minutes to revive her. The lack of oxygen for that long caused her damages she was not able to recover from. She had suffered a broken neck that separated her brain stem from spinal cord, which was broken in three places. Additionally she had a broken leg and shattered pelvis. She was on life support for few days and passed away on October 2, 2025.”

Shannon says no parent should endure this kind of duress.

“I have had an overwhelming amount of agony from losing her. So shocking to die at only 32 years old,” Venchuck said. “I wouldn’t want any other parent to ever suffer this kind of pain.”

Venchuk says she will install solar street light above her daughter’s roadside memorial today (Monday, Oct. 20).

“I want to have that dark part of the road safely lit up with many more lights as well,” she said. “Her light will shine on, through having this dangerous dark road improved in her honour. If that road had some better street lighting, she wouldn’t have been taken from us.”

Vanessa Venchuk was described by her mom as a loving, caring person. She leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son – and died at the same age as when her own dad passed.

“She always wanted to help others, and cared about each unique life mattering,” Shannon said. “By having that road better lit, she’s protecting others from the same fate. Hope others contribute towards ‘lighting the way.’ She was wonderful, and loved her children so much. So much tragedy is not how she would want to be remembered. Better to recall how that pretty girl, whose inner light shone so brightly, that it lit up the whole road. I will always miss her so very much.”
